Questions

Why not just multiply by 7?

Dogs and cats mature very quickly in the first two years (about 15 human years in year one and 24 by year two) and then age more slowly. The ×7 rule overstates young pets and understates the gap between small and large dogs.

Where do these numbers come from?

They follow the widely used veterinary estimate (American Veterinary Medical Association chart; AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidelines): 15 years for year one, 24 by year two, then about 4 per year for cats and small dogs, 5 for medium dogs and 6 for large dogs.

When is my pet a senior?

Cats are generally considered senior from about 10 years. Dogs from about 7, earlier for large and giant breeds. Ask your vet about senior check-ups.
