How old is my pet in human years?
The 'one dog year equals seven human years' rule is easy to remember, but it doesn't match how dogs and cats actually age.
Why ×7 is wrong
Dogs and cats grow up very fast in their first two years and then age more slowly. A one-year-old dog is already an adolescent, not a seven-year-old child.
The common veterinary estimate
- Year 1 ≈ 15 human years
- Year 2 ≈ 24 human years
- Each year after: cats ≈ +4; small dogs ≈ +4; medium dogs ≈ +5; large dogs ≈ +6 (larger breeds age faster).
This follows the widely used chart from the American Veterinary Medical Association and the AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidelines. It's an estimate: genetics, health and size all matter.

Life stages
Cats are usually considered senior from about 10 years, and dogs from about 7 years (earlier for giant breeds). Senior pets benefit from more frequent vet check-ups.

Is the calculator exact?
No. It gives a sensible estimate. Your vet can tell you more about your pet's actual health and life stage.
